![]() ![]() He enjoyed being a member of the American Legion and proudly held several positions within the post, most recently, Treasurer.ĭad didn’t know a stranger and he could and would talk to anyone. He served on the Southeast Warren Boosters and Lacona Fire Department for many years. He was a good friend, son, brother, father, grandpa and husband. Allen was an avid bird watcher and loved nothing more in his later years, than sitting on his porches and watching birds and waving to the cars that drove by the house. He was the fun, onery grandpa that taught his grandbabies a few tricks that always had them coming back for more. ![]() He enjoyed traveling, spending time with Karen and most of all, family time with all the grandkids. On May 14, 1988, he married Karen and together they had a blended family of his three children, Sheila, Loy, and Diana with Karen’s two sons, Robin and Todd. He then went on to work for Southeast Warren School District for 15 years before retiring. He worked for Armstrong/Pirelli Tires as a tire builder for many years. He served, as a sergeant during the Korean War and returned home in 1958. He was raised in Lacona with his nine siblings and later enlisted in the United States Army in 1955. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lacona Fire Department or Holy Trinity Altar Society.Īllen Joseph Miller was born September 23, 1935, to Herman and Eva Miller. Burial will be held at a later date at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery. Following the service, a luncheon will be held at the church for a time of refreshments and fellowship. A Rosary Service will be held at the funeral home on Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Lacona. Family will receive friends on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, December 2, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. Those left to honor the memory of Leland include his wife, Norma Borchert of Newton, daughters, Elizabeth (Michael) Stout of Newton and Deborah Borchert of Newton, sons, Steven Borchert of Pasadena, Texas and Gary (Connie) Borchert of Prior Lake, Minnesota, grandchildren, Jeffery Borchert, James (Erin) Borchert, Jason (Jennifer) Borchert, Jeremy (Robin) Borchert, Dustin Minner, Lindsay Minner, Matthew Stout, nine great-grandchildren, brothers, Edgar (Marlene) Borchert of Lacona, Iowa, Larry (Pat) Borchert of Indianola, Iowa, sisters, Gloria (Floyd) DeWitt of Chariton, Iowa, Grace (Virgil) Hartz of Newton, Ilene Borchert of Des Moines, Iowa, Joan Breese of Knoxville, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.Allen Miller, age 88, of Lacona, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Myrtle Smith, Leora Havard, Audrey Hartz, brothers, Paul Borchert, Glenn Borchert, Marvin Borchert, Henry Borchert and daughter-in-law, Linda Borchert. Leland entered into Glory on Monday, December 12, 2011, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Leland was a founding member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, a member of AMVETS in Knoxville, a member of Maytag Management Club, a member of VFW in Newton, and a founding member of Willis Adult Daycare Center, named after his mother, and now known as Willowbrook. ![]() ![]() Leland enjoyed woodworking, doing handyman projects for family, golfing, bowling, playing Solo and Pitch with family, watching the Chicago Cubs and sitting on his patio just enjoying life. Leland worked as a farmhand and an Occupational Therapist at VA Hospital in Knoxville before going to work for the Maytag Company, where he worked for 30 years and retired in 1983 as a supervisor in dryer assembly. On October 22, 1944, in Knoxville, Iowa, Leland was united in marriage to Norma Jean Hollingsworth. Leland served in the US Army during WWII and was a member of General George Patton's Honor Guard. Borchert, the son of Fred and Florence (Willis) Borchert was born at home in rural Lacona, Iowa on April 1, 1924. Memorials have been designated to Orphan Grain Train Central Nebraska Division, P.O. A visitation with the family present will be held from 7:00-9:00 pm, Wednesday, December 14 at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Funeral services for Leland will be held 10:00 am, Thursday, December 15 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Newton. ![]()
